Kiran Millwood Hargrave’s fourth middle grade book is definitely my favourite thing she’s ever written。 It’s the story of a girl named Sofia who lives on the outskirts of Siena with her mother and brother, as well as their pet crow Corvith (who is amazing and most definitely my favourite character), until a silver-veiled stranger changes everything and then after Sofia’s mama is arrested on her birthday and she and Ermin are taken to the city orphanage, she decides to work out what has happened Kiran Millwood Hargrave’s fourth middle grade book is definitely my favourite thing she’s ever written。 It’s the story of a girl named Sofia who lives on the outskirts of Siena with her mother and brother, as well as their pet crow Corvith (who is amazing and most definitely my favourite character), until a silver-veiled stranger changes everything and then after Sofia’s mama is arrested on her birthday and she and Ermin are taken to the city orphanage, she decides to work out what has happened to her mum and also solve some more of the city’s strange mysteries。 Sofia is a wonderful heroine, who is clever and brave and just, and I loved Ermin too, especially as the story and their relationship progressed。 As I’ve already mentioned, Corvith was 100% my favourite character, but a close second was Ghino, who is very complex but just has something really likeable about him。 The magpies were such excellent animal companions for the villains (not least because I’m terrified of them anyway), and I can’t use names because it’d be a bit spoilery, but I thought the villains were both very sinister and scarily similar to some people I’ve known in real life。 I feel like I’ve rambled for ages, but I also want to mention how much I loved the idea of bone building! This is such an atmospheric, enjoyable read, and I couldn’t put it down towards the end。 。。。more

'Small things could change the world。'A Secret of Birds & Bone is a beautifully crafted novel。 Kiran Millwood Hargrave takes us on an adventure through historic Siena alongside siblings Sofia and Ermin, who only wish to be reunited with their mother after the city guards stole her away。Hargrave's fantastical world of bone magic and avian 'familiars' is fascinating, and the plot is fast-paced and mysterious; it consistently turns in unexpected directions, and the allure of discovering the book's 'Small things could change the world。'A Secret of Birds & Bone is a beautifully crafted novel。 Kiran Millwood Hargrave takes us on an adventure through historic Siena alongside siblings Sofia and Ermin, who only wish to be reunited with their mother after the city guards stole her away。Hargrave's fantastical world of bone magic and avian 'familiars' is fascinating, and the plot is fast-paced and mysterious; it consistently turns in unexpected directions, and the allure of discovering the book's magical secrets had me truly gripped。 However, the ending disappointed me slightly - it felt a little rushed, and I was mildly disappointed that a large part of it rests somewhat upon fortuitous convenience。I love that the children are the main characters and heroes in this book, and that the adults are the villains。 Older villains are a common theme in books where children are the protagonists, but Hargrave does an especially good job of using this to portray the virtue of children's innocence and the corrupting effect of power in adults。 A Secret of Birds & Bone sends a message of hope for a new generation, and reminds the reader that it is wrong to selfishly value yourself above others。Sofia and Ermin are strong, resilient, and clever。 Their relationship is heartwarming, and Sofia (whose perspective we experience the story from) is relatable and authentic。 Many of the other characters were intriguing, but this is where I felt that the length of the story fell short: they felt somewhat underdeveloped, and if the book had been longer their motives could have been made much clearer。A Secret of Birds & Bone is overall an engaging and touching tale; an easy and fun read。 My only wish was that I'd been able to learn more about the captivating world and characters that Hargrave has created! 。。。more

I’ve enjoyed so many of Kiran Millwood Hargrave books and A Secret of Birds & Bone is no exception。 One of the things I enjoy so much is how the stories feel so alive as you read them。 The worldbuilding and characters are vivid, and I never struggle to feel like I’m walking alongside the characters。 In A Secret of Birds & Bone especially you have so much to appreciate。 The bone building ornaments and the house especially。 It sounds magical and full of respect when given you have bones as the sou I’ve enjoyed so many of Kiran Millwood Hargrave books and A Secret of Birds & Bone is no exception。 One of the things I enjoy so much is how the stories feel so alive as you read them。 The worldbuilding and characters are vivid, and I never struggle to feel like I’m walking alongside the characters。 In A Secret of Birds & Bone especially you have so much to appreciate。 The bone building ornaments and the house especially。 It sounds magical and full of respect when given you have bones as the source it would easily fall under garish。 The story is engaging and it’s easy to read through this book in one sitting without realising the time passed。 I was almost at the end before I knew it and never felt like anything was missing from the adventures。 I really enjoyed A Secret of Birds & Bone and would recommend it。 It’s not my favourite book by the author, The Deathless Girls and The Island at the End of Everything hold those places but for different reasons。 If you’ve not read any of Kiran Millwood Hargrave books before this is a good introduction to her writing but you really won’t be disappointed by any of her books。 。。。more

This is a definite 5 star read。We follow Sofia in the Italian city of Siena。 Small pox went through the town a handful of years ago, and many people died。 Sofia's brother Ermine was very close to dying, but pulled through。Sofia's mother is an bone artist。 She makes things, like locks and keys and trinkets, out of bone。 Their whole house is made from bones。 It is a weird thing for me, but for Sofia it is completely normal。 The story kicks off with Il Palio, the big horserace in Siena (which used This is a definite 5 star read。We follow Sofia in the Italian city of Siena。 Small pox went through the town a handful of years ago, and many people died。 Sofia's brother Ermine was very close to dying, but pulled through。Sofia's mother is an bone artist。 She makes things, like locks and keys and trinkets, out of bone。 Their whole house is made from bones。 It is a weird thing for me, but for Sofia it is completely normal。 The story kicks off with Il Palio, the big horserace in Siena (which used to be a name of a local restaurant) and then everything goes wrong。The story takes several twists and turns, and it feels exciting and dangerous in equal measure。 We meet a collection of characters who are all engaging, and some of them show a great depth in a short amount of time。 It all feels very real, and something that a 12 year old would be able to do。 Kids will love how independent Sofia is, and adults won't be rolling their eyes at what actions she takes。Whilst this story is going, and Sofia is trying to solve the mysteries of everything happening, she shows a strong connection to her brother (without the author overdoing it) and to some other characters too。 The world is well designed, and there is a hint of magic in the air。A wonderful book, for children and adults alike。 。。。more

I don’t often read middle grade books, but this was fantastic! It was a historical novel (with the setting being Siena, Italy shortly after the Smallpox epidemic and having the cathedral and the Palio) with some fiction and magical realism (the bone carving and binding, pet crows and magpies)

I really enjoyed this story。 It was a quick read for me as it’s a middle-grade book, but the story delights with the backdrop of Italy and mesmerises you with the detail of bones。 It begins on Sofia’s twelfth birthday where her mother has been busy for many weeks building something secret out of bones in her workshop。 Sofia’s mother is a Bone Builder, and the story goes into detail about many of the amazing things her mother builds out of bones for others, but also for her children。 Sofia’s a bi I really enjoyed this story。 It was a quick read for me as it’s a middle-grade book, but the story delights with the backdrop of Italy and mesmerises you with the detail of bones。 It begins on Sofia’s twelfth birthday where her mother has been busy for many weeks building something secret out of bones in her workshop。 Sofia’s mother is a Bone Builder, and the story goes into detail about many of the amazing things her mother builds out of bones for others, but also for her children。 Sofia’s a bit put out because her mother promised to be finished by her birthday, but of course she is still busy。 Her mother leaves her and her brother, promising to be back for her birthday celebrations, but Sofia is upset and angry and the she decides to visit the city, partly I believe to follow her mother, but also because she is determined to visit the horse racing。While in the city, Sofia spots her mother with guards chasing her, and so it sets off in motion a turn of events where Sofia and her brother Ermin determine to find the whereabouts of their mother and discover the secret of what she’s been building。I really liked the flow of this story。 It was well thought through, very well explained, and you definitely got a distinct view of the characters。 The worldbuilding of the city and Sofia’s mother’s talent for bone building was quite amazing and very cleverly done。 Hats off to Kiran Millwood Hargrave for imagining such a tale! There wasn’t much I didn’t like in this book, to be honest。 I loved it all the way through。 From the magpie tower to the secret river, there were so many things to discover on the journey。A delightful tale that enchants from the beginning。 。。。more

Although this was a very imaginative story with an interesting villain, the plot seemed short and hard to follow and the ending was unsatisfactory。 What I learn is that I'm not a huge fan of adventurous fantasy, they have no link to real life, nothing to learn from them which before I didn't know I liked in a book。 I enjoyed Kiran's The Island at the End of Everything but the other two I've read by her (this one and The Girl of Ink and Stars) weren't as good。 I'm looking forward to my next book, Although this was a very imaginative story with an interesting villain, the plot seemed short and hard to follow and the ending was unsatisfactory。 What I learn is that I'm not a huge fan of adventurous fantasy, they have no link to real life, nothing to learn from them which before I didn't know I liked in a book。 I enjoyed Kiran's The Island at the End of Everything but the other two I've read by her (this one and The Girl of Ink and Stars) weren't as good。 I'm looking forward to my next book, in our dimension! 😂 。。。more

I loved the setting of course – I spent the summer of 2007 learning Italian in Siena, and this took me right back to the narrow streets, the stunning cathedral, and the glory that is Piazza del Campo。 I also really liked the idea of bone binding – the idea of making things out of bone seems a little creepy initially, but KMH portrays it as something magical and spiritual, and I was fascinated by all the intricate things Sofia’s mother creates。 And Sofia is another fabulous heroine – fearless, clever and compassionate。 Another unique magical tale from Kiran Millwood Hargrave。 。。。more

You might just end up enjoying it but unfortunately this book isn't my cup of tea。 。。。more

There are all sorts of beautiful and inventive objects carved out of bone, and at one point are like clues in a mystery as Sofia, her brother Ermin, and a hideaway have an adventure in the underground tunnels。There was one scene in the tunnel sequence where you could really see Kiran Millwood Hargrave was writing from experience, and that was the psuedo-free swimming scene。 (It's technically in an underground pool, so it's not actual free swimming, but semantics。) The descriptions felt so authentic in this section, full of little details I might not have thought about。The fantastic elements are subtle and come in late, so I shan't say much, but it does combine with the bones and bird companions to make it undeniably not "true" historical。 The birds are not as big a feature as the bones, and were like companions - the guards had magpies and Sofia and Ermin had a crow friend。 。。。more
